Ryan Syler is a PhD student at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and a Research Associate at Corpus Christi Oxford College in Hilary and Trinity Term 2026. He grew up in Austin, Texas and served in the United States Navy from 1999 - 2012. While on active duty he earned a BA in History from Thomas Edison State College. After leaving active duty he earned an MA in Teaching from Seattle Pacific University in 2015 and taught secondary History and English Language Arts from 2015 to 2020. He earned an MA in Liberal Arts from St. John's College in 2021 and continued on to doctoral studies at Marquette. He is currently working on his dissertation focusing on the synthesis of Christian and Germanic themes and imagery in the work of J.R.R. Tolkien.
