Julie is a medievalist and palaeographer trained at Moscow State, Oxford, and Cambridge, who has been teaching Inkling-related topics at Oxford since 2008. She is the author of three scholarly monographs - including A Maid with a Dragon (Oxford University Press, 2016) - five edited volumes, and over fifty academic articles.
Her background ranges across History, Theology, and English, with teaching and research posts at Cambridge, Queen Mary University of London, Reading, Oxford, and Winchester, as well as postdocs in art history in London and Paris. From 2011 to 2014 she was a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of English at King's College London. She also has a diploma in psychology, and she is not afraid to use it.
In 2024 Julie accidentally wrote a Tolkien-influenced fantasy novel set in Oxford as a way of coping with the death of her father. This launched her on a hilariously painful (and occasionally, painfully hilarious) quest to win the acceptance of a literary agent, an editor, a publisher - and her remaining family. She is currently working on the sequel.
Julie has two children and a computer scientist husband - a combination which, she hopes, may shave a little time off her otherwise significant stay in Purgatory.
